Websites & WordPress

Keep your WordPress site fast, stable and easy to manage, without needing to be a developer.

The WordPress essentials

Get these right and most website headaches never happen.

1. Keep everything updated

Core, themes and plugins. Most hacked sites were running something out of date. Update weekly, and always after a backup.

2. Use fewer, better plugins

Every plugin is code you’re trusting. Remove anything inactive or unused, and favor well-supported plugins with recent updates.

3. Pick a lightweight theme

A fast, well-coded theme (this site runs Kadence) beats a bloated multipurpose theme loaded with features you’ll never use.

4. Use a staging site for big changes

Test theme switches, major updates and redesigns on a copy first, then push them live.

5. Mind your speed

Compress images, use caching, and check your pages with Google PageSpeed Insights. Slow sites lose visitors and rankings.

6. Protect your admin login

Strong unique passwords, two-factor authentication, and no account named ‘admin’.

7. Clean up users regularly

Remove old contractors and anyone who no longer needs access, and give people the lowest role that works.

8. Know who to call

Keep your hosting, domain and site logins documented in one safe place so help can get in fast when you need it.
