Lead Magnets That Actually Work
“Sign up for my newsletter!”
Be honest. When was the last time you saw that on a website and thought, “Yes, I want more email”?
That’s the problem with most email signup forms. They ask for something (your email address) without offering a real reason to hand it over. A lead magnet fixes that. It’s something useful you give away in exchange for an email address, and when it’s done right, it’s one of the best ways to grow your list.
I’ve been calling this kind of thing “side traffic,” a useful resource that gives people another way to find you. Here’s the video where I talk through the idea:
The tool I mention in the video is my free 60-Second AI Authority Analysis at Profit From What You Know. Enter your trade and location, and it maps out 10 ways to turn what you already know into content, including lead magnet ideas like an opt-in checklist or a short lead-gen book. It’s a good place to start if you’re not sure what your lead magnet should be.
What makes a lead magnet work
The lead magnets that actually get downloaded have a few things in common:
- They solve one specific problem. “The Ultimate Guide to Marketing” is too big. “The 10-Minute Google Business Profile Checklist” is just right.
- They deliver a quick win. Someone should be able to use it today and feel like they got something.
- They’re connected to what you sell. A landscaper’s lead magnet should attract people who might hire a landscaper, not just anybody who wants something free.
- They’re easy to consume. A one-page checklist gets used. A 90-page ebook gets saved “for later” and forgotten.
Lead magnet ideas that work
You don’t need to write a book. Some of the best lead magnets are simple:
- Checklists: a step-by-step list for a task your customers do
- Templates: an email template, a planning worksheet, a budget spreadsheet
- Short guides: a 5 to 10 page answer to one common question
- Free tools: a calculator, generator or quiz
- Swipe files: examples people can copy and adapt
- Mini courses: a short series of emails or videos
A few examples by business type:
- A photographer: “What to Wear for Family Photos” guide
- A bookkeeper: a monthly records checklist
- A web designer: a website launch checklist
- A coach: a self-assessment quiz
How to find the right topic
Don’t guess. Look at:
- The questions people ask you most. If you answer it every week, that’s a lead magnet.
- What people search for. Google’s “People also ask” box is full of ideas.
- What a little AI help suggests. My free AI Authority Analysis gives you ideas tailored to your trade and area in about a minute.
- What your audience tells you. Simply asking them is the most reliable research there is. That’s exactly why I built Yurpl: to find out what’s on your visitors’ minds instead of guessing.
Deliver it automatically
Here’s where a lot of people drop the ball. They create a great lead magnet, then email it out by hand, or not at all.
Connect your signup form to an email service so the lead magnet is delivered automatically, every time, even while you’re asleep. Then follow up with a short welcome sequence: introduce yourself, share something helpful, and let them know how you can help.
I use Flodesk for this. The forms and emails look great without a lot of fiddling, and the automations are simple to set up. If you sign up through my Flodesk link, you’ll get 25% off your first year (and I get a small referral credit).
Put it where people will see it
A lead magnet hidden on one page won’t do much. Offer it:
- On your homepage
- At the end of related blog posts (like this one)
- In your email signature
- On your social media profiles
- In the back of your book, if you have one
Then what?
Getting the email address is the start, not the finish line. I wrote about what to do next in I Built the Lead Magnet, Now What?
The bottom line
A good lead magnet gives first. It solves a real problem, delivers a quick win, and naturally leads to what you offer. Start with one simple checklist or template, connect it to your email service, and put it everywhere your audience already is.
